Dental Crowns Frisco, TX

If a tooth is badly damaged or decayed, a filling, inlay, or onlay may not be sufficient to protect or preserve the tooth. In this situation, Dr. Mughal may recommend a dental crown, a protective measure that ensures the long-term health of your tooth.

What are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a cap that fits over a damaged or decayed tooth. The crown covers the entire tooth above the gum line and is permanently bonded to the remaining natural tooth. This restores the tooth to its natural look and function, ensuring you can smile with confidence. Dental crowns can also be attached to a dental bridge or dental implants to replace missing teeth.

What are dental crowns for?

Crowns restore function, strengthen the remaining portion of the natural tooth, and protect it from future damage.

Dental crowns also preserve the attractive appearance of your smile after an injury or infection of the tooth. With proper care and regular dental check-ups, a dental crown can last for many years, providing a long-term solution to your dental issues.

After a root canal, a dental crown protects the tooth and preserves its strength and integrity to prevent bacteria from gaining access to the root canals. Some individuals who experience consistent pain in their molars may have hairline cracks that do not show up on X-rays. Placing a crown over these teeth may relieve the pain and prevent further cracking.

Crowns vs. Veneers

Both crowns and veneers can correct cosmetic flaws, such as minor chips or cracks in teeth. However, veneers are purely cosmetic and cover only the front portion of a tooth.

Crowns cover the entire tooth surface to correct more severe flaws that affect appearance and function. While veneers improve appearance, crowns also improve function, strengthen the tooth, and protect it from future damage.

What types of dental crowns are available?

  • Porcelain Crowns:

Porcelain crowns are extremely durable and closely resemble tooth enamel, making them an attractive choice for visible tooth restorations. They do not put excessive wear on opposing teeth and are an excellent choice for anyone with metal allergies.

  • Gold Crowns:

Gold crowns are the strongest and longest-lasting type of dental crown. However, because of their appearance, they are usually reserved for molars.

  • Porcelain Over Gold Crowns:

Porcelain over gold crowns combine the best characteristics of each—the durability of metal and the natural appearance of porcelain. They can be used on both front and back teeth and last almost as long as metal crowns.

What should you expect when getting a dental crown?

Fitting a crown requires at least two visits to our office. At your first appointment, we remove any decay or damage and shape the tooth. We then take an impression of the tooth. We send the impression to our dental lab, where a custom crown is fabricated, which takes about a week. During this time, we cover the tooth with a temporary crown.

During your second visit, we will remove the temporary crown and fit and adjust the custom crown. After smoothing rough edges and polishing the crown, we cement it into place. You go home with a beautifully restored tooth!

Cost of Dental Crowns

The cost of a dental crown varies depending on the size of the tooth, the materials used, and other factors.

Your dental insurance may cover a portion of the cost. We can give you an accurate quote for your dental crown after you contact your insurance provider to determine your coverage limits.

Dr. Moghul will discuss your options at your consultation to help determine the type of crown that fits your needs and budget. We accept several payment options and offer financing to get the dental care you need.
